St. Johns River
From June to October, the mighty St Johns River provides a variety of fish. Redfish, trout, flounder, sheepshead, black drum & croaker are all likely catches. Starting in June, the shrimp begin to show up in the river. The saltwater fish move up river to feed on the shrimp. The trip begins with cast netting shrimp, which in itself is a unique experience. Shrimp will be the live bait for your trip. Docks, bridges and channel edges are all great areas to fish.
Intracoastal Waterway (ICW)
From St Augustine heading North, the ICW and it's tidal creeks provide outstanding fishing year round with the fall, winter & spring months (October - April) being the best. All inshore species can be caught with an inshore slam (redfish, trout & flounder) being a real possibility. Here, the tide ranges 4-5 feet on average. The best fishing occurs during the last half of the falling tide into the first half of the incoming tide.
Guana Lake
Located just North of St Augustine along Highway A1A, this is truly a unique fishery. Guana Lake is roughly eight miles long by a half-mile wide. It is inside of Guana State Park and is surrounded by beautiful, unspoiled coastal scenery (not something found much anymore in Florida). This is a shallow body of brackish water, which is full of trout and redfish. Flounder and black drum round out the targeted fish in Guana Lake. There are special restrictions on Guana Lake, which include a 10 hp engine limit. This prevents large boats from accessing this fishery. Personal Water Craft (jet skis) are also prohibited. During the summer into the early fall (June - October) the fishing can be outstanding.
